The relevant draft resolution No. 5070 (on detention of Judge Chaus) was supported by 281 lawmakers, while 279 MPs voted for the draft resolution No. 5071 (on pretrial confinement of Judge Chaus).
Before the vote, Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legal Policy and Justice Ruslan Kniazevych noted that the parliament would be deprived of the power to consider such issues in two weeks as they will be transferred within the competence of the High Council of Justice of Ukraine.
He stressed that at today's meeting, all the committee members supported the motion of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine for consent to criminal prosecution of the Dniprovskyi district court of Kyiv Mykola Chaus, suspected of corruption. Kniazevych also noted that the committee recommended the Verkhovna Rada to authorize the detention, and pretrial confinement of Judge Chaus by two draft resolution.
"We are talking about two resolutions: consent to detention of Judge Chaus and consent to his pretrial confinement," Kniazevych explained.
He also stressed that the judge personally attended neither the meeting of the committee nor the session of the parliament. Meanwhile, today's committee meeting was attended by Chaus' lawyer acting on his behalf.
Earlier, NABU detectives nabbed Judge of the Dniprovskyi district court of Kyiv Mykola Chaus who was extorting and obtained an unlawful benefit in the amount of $150,000.
Chaus previously tried Euromaidan activists, convicted former leader of UKROP party Hennadii Korban, and made judgments in favor of Yanukovych's ally Yurii Ivaniushchenko also known in criminal world as Yura Yenakievskyi.
