"A clear message must be sent to Vladimir Putin: release Nadiia Savchenko or face sanctions," - Senator McCain. VIDEO

Censor.NET reports citing U.S. Senator John McCain's Twitter.

"A clear message must be sent to Vladimir Putin: release Nadiia Savchenko or face sanctions," he wrote.

According to McCain, her captivity represents "the latest example of Russia's brazen aggression and disregard for the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine."

"Nadia is just one of many of President Putin's countless victims, and her show trial - a throwback to the Stalinist Soviet era - is intended not to establish innocent or guilt but to punish decent men, evoke fear, and remind citizens of what happens to people who dare defy the former KGB officer Vladimir Putin," U.S. senator said.

McCain also mentioned Ukrainian film director Oleh Sentsov sentenced to 20 years in prison as yet another example of political persecution in Russia.
