I went to Crimea before ‘referendum’. Verkhovna Rada of Autonomous Republic of Crimea was surrounded by Russian Special Forces, – Poroshenko. VIDEO

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko went to Crimea to negotiate with the leadership of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (ARC) on Feb. 28, 2014 as a parliamentarian.

Poroshenko talks about this episode in a video posted on his Facebook page, Censor.NET reports citing Channel 112 Ukraina.

Poroshenko said that the situation looked doubtful at the very beginning of the emergence of the 'little green men' and other 'mass movements' in Crimea. As a representative of Oleksandr Turchynov, former Verkhovna Rada Head and Deputy President of Ukraine, Poroshenko arrived to Crimea to negotiate with the parliamentarians of the ARC.

"I was going to talk with the head, the presidium, and the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of the Crimea and to offer all they wanted. Then we were ready to discuss all details on the legislation of Ukraine and the Constitution of Crimea," Poroshenko said.

The president recalls that he was met by a row of soldiers in the airport and asked not to go to the Verkhovna Rada, but to meet in a bath and laundry complex outside Simferopol. Poroshenko refused and insisted that the meeting must be held in the building of the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea.

"I was hinted that I won't make it. I answered that they know nothing about me," the president said.

They stopped the car in 300-400 meters from the building of the Verkhovna Rada. Poroshenko walked this distance accompanied by an assistant.

"What have I seen? The Verkhovna Rada was blocked and closed. There was no one inside when 'referendum' was supposedly discussed. The building was surrounded by Russian troops. According to the international law, it was a clear annexation," the head of the state recalled.

Poroshenko has also added that the military were not soldiers of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation, but Special Forces from Russia, trained to seize Crimea. The president also remembered that there was a man beside him who turned out to be an FSB officer. He coordinated activities of the so-called local self-defense.

"It was expected, I was not surprised at all. But I am proud of the behavior of the few people who expressed support to us against the background of this phantasmagoria. It was quite unsafe at the time," the president added.
