Russians to enter Ukraine with international passports only

The Prime Minister of Ukraine Arsenii Yatseniuk signed a decree by the Ukraine's government "On suspension of certain articles of the Agreement between governments of Ukraine and the Russian Federation on visa-free travel of the citizens of Ukraine and Russian Federation."

Censor.NET reports citing the government's press service.

The prime minister stressed the need to tighten control on the Russian-Ukrainian border and of "introduction of European rules of crossing the state border, including by the citizens of the Russian Federation."

Yatsenyuk said the government passed the decree to suspend certain provisions of the Agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on visa-free travel of citizens of Ukraine and Russia: "National passport and birth certificate are no longer sufficient documents for crossing the Ukrainian state border."

Provisions of the bilateral Agreement regarding other documents of Russian citizens to enter the territory of Ukraine, such as diplomatic and service passports, continue to apply.

The head of government reminded that Russian President Vladimir Putin "asked to adopt crossing of the state border exclusively with international passports": "Well, we heard his request. Now we need that Russian citizens used exclusively foreign passports, as requested by Vladimir Putin."

Such a decision, Yatseniuk stressed, will significantly tighten border control and ensure the interests of national security of Ukraine.

Yatsenyuk also said that Agreement on local border traffic with the Russian Federation does not meet European standards: "Together with our European partners we clearly defined area and its borders [of local border traffic - ed.]; each citizen who can enjoy the privileges of the Agreement on local border traffic is issued a registration certificate."
