"SBU counter-intelligence, as part of its anti-terrorist operations, has detained a Ukrainian citizen Igor Perepechaienko, born in 1972, who describes himself as the deputy mayor of Sloviansk, the Donetsk region," she said.

Ostapenko added that the SBU has obtained information that Perepechaienko has also been involved in organization of separatist events in the Donetsk region, "followed by violence towards civilians, and destruction and damage to property."

It is also known that the detainee was involved in capture of administrative buildings, in particular that of the Donetsk Regional Administration, and of regional offices of the SBU and the Police.

SBU reports that Perepechaienko had previously established contact with members of Russian intelligence and subversive group headed by Russian citizen Igor Girkin ("Strelkov"). He had helped these people to organize terrorist acts in the Donetsk region. These activities of the members of the Russian Special Forces have resulted in deaths of SBU officers in the course of their duties.
