Legitimacy of Next Convocation of Verkhovna Rada Remains inQuestion, Says Opposition
Below is the text of a faction's statement provided by thepress-service:
"Before perhaps the last session of the Verkhovna Rada of the6th convocation, on behalf of the faction I would liked to announcethat the legitimacy of the next convocation of the Verkhovna Radaof Ukraine is questionable.
The election was illegitimate starting from the illegaldetention of opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko and one of itsleaders Yuriy Lutsenko.
Even while in prison, she showed courage and continues to fightfor the rights of Ukrainian citizens to elect and be elected.
She went on hunger strike in protest against the systemic, massive fraud that led to the distortion of the citizens'voting.
She stopped it because the whole democratic world questioned thelegitimacy and democracy of the Ukrainian elections.
Our faction thanks Yulia Volodymirivna for the courage andsupports her decision to end the hunger strike.
After this step of Yulia Tymoshenko we believe it is necessaryonly increase the political pressure on the current regime led byYanukovych.
We will do everything possible to ensure that forgers of theparliamentary elections are punished. To make sure that ourcomrades who have gained legitimate victories in single-seatconstituencies took their place in parliament. We will fight withall constitutional means, both in Parliament and outside of it, toachieve the release of our leader Yulia Tymoshenko.
With regard to the election results announced by the CentralElection Commission, they do not reflect the true choice of thecitizens. The result which the CEC announced - is the result ofsystemic fraud, vote-buying, use of administrative resources, forceinterference by police and other authorities in the electoralprocess and complete dependency of the judiciary system that makesdecisions solely in the interests of the regime and pro-governmentcandidates.
The most vivid illustration of unprincipled direct electionfraud was counting procedures in 94, 132, 194, 197 and 223electoral districts where in order to drag the pro-governmentcandidates into the parliament tens of thousands of votes werethrown away.
Mass violations in parliamentary elections are reflected in theevaluations of local and international observers. As a consequence,it has further worsened the reputation of our country in the world.International democratic community, in particular the observersfrom the OSCE and PACE had to admit: Ukraine has strayed off thepath of democratic development and began movement in the oppositedirection.
The responsibility for this lies with the current authoritiesled by President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych."
