My deepest sympathies go to Aliona Prytula. I'm lost for words.
The killing of Pavel Sheremet is a hit against chief editor of Ukrainska Pravda personally. It's a hit against the entire Ukrainian press and democracy.
In two and a half years, there have been no attempts against decision-making people's deputies and ministers. It was a journalist who reported about it who has been killed.
A life of a reporter is not more valuable than a life of any other citizen, especially in the country at war. But this contract killing of the journalist is a challenge to the entire state, because not just him - all of us have been targeted. Quite possible, Aliona Prytula was attempted as well. This is real terrorism.
And the killers are confident of their impunity.
Today, the car of Editor-in-Chief of Ukrainska Pravda Aliona Prutyla was blasted, and a reporter and her friend was killed.
We cannot but remember that 16 years ago another journalist was killed - the founder of Ukrainska Pravda Heorhii Gongadze. And that unfortunately, no trial over masterminds behind Heorhii Gongadze's killing has been held until now. Although there is enough evidence, audio recordings and proofs for such trial. Purely political considerations of the Ukrainian authorities prevent them from setting this trial over masterminds behind the Gongadze killing in order not to sour their relations with former President Leonid Kuchma. We have proofs and cues, but have no court ruling. Kuchma in Ukraine is above the law. Although the killer General Pukach states he acted upon Kuchma's order, although there are recordings of Melnychenko, there is still no trial. And Ukrainian justice refuses to appraise this evidence.
Now, we will hear condolences and remorse of politicians, but they have done nothing over the past two and a half years to find those behind the killing of Gongadze 16 years ago. Neither the president, nor the government have stirred a finger or said a word to complete the investigation of Gongadze murder. Kuchma is needed for talks with Putin and some other things. The authorities do not want to legalize the recordings of Melnychenko.
The words of sympathy will be said by the same people who have been sympathizing over Gongadze's death in the past 16 years.
I hope this challenge to the state and the society, this grave crime will be solved, and its organizers and perpetrators will be found. Neither Ukrainian politicians, nor Russian secret forces should be excluded from the list of alleged suspects.
This is an examination of capabilities and viability for the leadership of Ukrainian law enforcement system. It's Pavel who was blasted today, but each of us has been affected. This wound will never heal, just like the wounds after killings of Heorhii Gongadze and Ihor Aleksandrov [Donetsk region reporter, allegedly killed for materials against then-governor Viktor Yanyukovych - ed.].
