 Sappers neutralized more than 5,600 items of ordnance in Balakliia, - Defense Ministry. PHOTOS

Engineering units continue to eliminate the consequences of the fire at ammunition depot in the Kharkiv region.

Censor.NET reports citing the Defense Ministry press service.

"The sappers mainly work within the perimeter of the military unit. More than 130 servicemen of engineering troops and six IMR-1 engineering vehicles are involved into the operation," the statement reads.

According to officer of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel Vitalii Bondarenko, military engineers have already found and neutralized more than 5,600 explosive items, 830 of which were utilized at a special training ground.

Military also continue to restore the garrison, located next to the ammo depot. In particular, windows are being glazed and roofs are being repaired.

On March 23, 2017, an emergency arose at the military ammunition depot of the Defense Ministry in Ukraine's eastern town of Balakliia. Several storage areas of rocket and cannon artillery ordnance (tank and artillery missiles of 125 mm and 152 mm caliber) caught fire, with massive explosions of ordnance following. More than 16,000 Balakliia residents were evacuated.

Chief Military Prosecutor Anatolii Matios said the emergency in Balakliia was an act of sabotage.

Later, a video of explosions at the ammunition depot was published online.

According to Defense Minister Poltorak, the incident in Balakliia caused no serious damage to the defense capacity of the country.
