The Holosiivskyi district court of Kyiv has released Valerii Kukel, the owner of the flat where Lt. Col. of Security Service Alfa Group Andrii Kuzmenko and intelligence operative Oleh Muzhchil were killed during a shoot-out on Dec. 9, 2015.

Censor.NET reports quoting its chief editor Yurii Butusov.

"Yesterday, Jan. 16, the Holosiivskyi district court of Kyiv released Valerii Kukel, the owner of the flat where Lt. Col. of Security Service Alfa Group Andrii Kuzmenko and Defense Intelligence officer Oleh Muzhchil were killed during a shoot-out on Dec. 9, 2015. The hearing of the case will go on, charges against the Kukels have not been dropped, but they will continue to defend themselves at large," the journalist writes.

"On Dec. 9, 2015, Kukel was detained while leaving his house. After that, he and Alfa fighters went up to his apartment. The wife opened the door and the shooting started... Valerii has stayed in a remand prison since that time. His wife Olena was released from custody in July 2016," Butusov adds.

According to him, a lot of questions remain open, including what triggered the shooting, how the officers interacted, who failed to give a warning, who gave a machine gun to an employee living in a secure apartment in Kyiv, who was the first to pull the trigger and why, what commands sounded, etc.

"All this should be published and submitted to court, the society must draw conclusions, and a verdict should be delivered," Butusov says.

"Two outstanding people were killed in a shoot-out between two Ukrainian security structures," he stresses.

On Dec. 9, 2015, a special operation to track and eliminate a subversive group planning terrorist attacks in Ukraine took place in Kyiv and other cities across the country. Seven people were detained: three Russian citizens and four Ukrainians. Oleh Muzhchil was shot dead. He was first thought to be the leader of the subversive group but turned out to be an intelligence operative. SBU officer Andrii Kuzmenko died as well.
