The family members, friends and classmates laid flowers at Tabala's grave and expressed their gratitude to the fallen hero. Serhii Tabala, known by the nomme de guerre "Sever" (North), was the youngest fighter in the Donetsk airport.
"If not us, who? If not now, when?" the 18-year-old hero used to say, defending the country. He was an active participant in the Revolution of Dignity. After an armed conflict broke out in the east of Ukraine, he joined the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) as a volunteer. He was wounded but remained in the ranks. He died of a 100 mm artillery shell as Russian militants were assaulting the Donetsk airport control tower.
Serhii's picture taken in the Donetsk airport was used as an image for the monument to Ukrainian military volunteers in the village of Sviatopetrivske of the Kyiv region.
To honor the hero, a memorial plaque was set up in the Sumy specialized school No. 9 and Paryzkoi Komuny Street was renamed after his name. Serhii Tabala would be now 20 years old.
