Censor.NET reports citing Otkrytaya Rossiya news website.
"We stumbled upon 47-year-old citizen of Ukraine Roman Sushchenko in a cell of Lefortovo prison by pure chance. He told us that he was a journalist accused of spying. Sushchenko was unable to tell us the details of his detention and charges brought against him. Lefortovo employees prohibited us to ask him about his criminal case," Moscow Public Monitoring Commission member Zoya Svetova explained.
Sushchenko told human rights activists that he was exerted psychological pressure upon during the arrest, the investigator did not allow him to call home and tell his wife about his arrest. The FSB investigators provided him a publicly financed lawyer. Sushchenko asked the human rights activists to contact the Consul of Ukraine in Moscow. The Ukrainian consul has confirmed information on the journalist's detention in Russia.
Roman Sushchenko worked as a Paris correspondent for Ukrinform, as seen from the articles published on the website of the news agency under his name.
In addition to Sushchenko, Valentyn Vyhovskyi charged of spying for Ukraine is currently serving his 14-year sentence in the Kirov region of the Russian Federation. Russia citizen Viktor Shchur accused of spying for Ukraine is serving a 12-year sentence in Bashkortostan.
The Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine later confirmed journalist Sushchenko's detention. The ministry noted that its legal department was collecting necessary information on the circumstances and reasons for the detention.
