Every year on Aug. 22, Ukraine pays tribute to police officers who sacrificed their lives in the fight against crime.
Among other posthumously awarded law enforcers, Lt. Col. Volodymyr V. Honchar was marked with the United Nations' Dag Hammarskjöld Medal for the exemplary performance of official duties during his serving in a peacekeeping operation in Ivory Coast. This is the first time a Ukrainian has been given this special posthumous award.
"They died defending our country from chaos, bandits and invaders. Moreover, today is the anniversary of the Ilovaisk tragedy. We have to remember it and ensure that their feat will be timeless," Avakov remarked.
National Police First Deputy Head Vadym Troian, who personally took part in the battle for Ilovaisk, thanked mothers and wives of those who did not survive.
"We have to win this war, the enemy will be banished from our land!" he said.
