As noted, Bondarenko passed on two of his first four jumps, but was ultimately unable to clear 2.38 meters to beat Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim.

Canada's Derek Drouin took gold, clearing a height of 2.38 meters. Barshim, in turn, claimed silver, narrowly missing out on his country's first Olympic gold.

In a commentary to Ukraine's National Olympic Committe, Bondarenko said he would have been upset about such a result if someone had announced it 10 days before, as he was in good shape at that moment. However, he caught a cold during the final training and his condition was far from being effective.

When asked whether he was satisfied with his reward, Bondarenko said: "I'm happy, today I did my best."
