"Ukrainian and foreign media have many times reported usage of modern Russian Rtut-BM communications jamming system in combat activities in the Donbas. However, no photo or video evidence of them has been ever shown. Eventually, volunteers have found pictures of such station on a social media page of a female terrorist," the article reads.
Earlier, deputy secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksandr Lytvynenko reported Rtut jammers in the Donbas in June 2015. On July 20, 2016 Ukrainian military intelligence announced Rtut-BM was used by Russian troops to the west from occupied city of Horlivka. Several days later, NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov announced that Russia's General Staff continues using the occupied territories of the Donbas as a testing ground during bloody provocations and named a number of Russian latest military equipment, including Rtut-BM multifunctional system.
On this image posted by a female terrorist on her social media page in late July 2015, a part of a station with a tactical sign "25 in a diamond" is seen. Such tactical signs are used by Russian occupation troops in the territory controlled by "DPR" terrorist organization. This tactical sign might belong to the so-called separate electronic warfare company military unit 08821, deployed in Donetsk.
General information about Rtut-BM station
Rtut BM is a modernized version of Rtut-B. The newer system is more reliable and has more functions. The system is a means of radio-electronic warfare aimed at impact reduction of shell submunition by affecting a radio frequency fuse. The system is able to blast a shell at a safe altitude. It is mostly used at front line forces, command centers, and launching platforms. Rtut-BM might be also applied for cover of moving objects at crossing points.
Rtut-BM covers an area of about 50 hectares with a radio electronic 'cap,' forcing approaching shells explode at altitude of some 200-300 meters above protected objects. Rtut-BM system can be also used for jamming aviation and ground communications at VHF waves and radio location of reconnaissance aircraft.
These are photos of the system made in Russian state corporation Rostekh pavilion.
"At the moment, it was not possible to establish exact geolocation of the system based on the photo by the terrorist, but the searches continue. To help us establish the location, here are some more photos of the same period, July 2015," the authors note.
