Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) Nazar Kholodnytskyi wrote on Facebook, Censor.NET reports.
"Judge of the Dniprovskyi district court of Kyiv Mykola Chaus was caught by the detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine while accepting $150,000 in bribe, under the procedural supervision of the members of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) yesterday. The exhibit was seized at the scene of the bribe transfer. That's how some of the servants of Themis store the proceeds of corruption (see photo - Ed.).
"Despite the fact that the perpetrator was caught while committing offense punished by part 4 of article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (acceptance of a bribe by an official), which stipulates for imprisonment of 8 to 12 years with confiscation of property, the judge cannot be arrested and taken into custody, as he enjoys judicial immunity under the Constitution. Since the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is now on vacation, it will be unable to promptly consider the corresponding motion and give consent for his arrest and pretrial custody, as it did in the case with Odesa judge Buran," he wrote.
"The society urgently demands just punishment for corrupt officials. Both SAP prosecutors and NABU detectives are making every effort to bring this and other 'untouchable' culprits to justice swiftly and fairly. But it is obvious that the old legal system, which still cannot get rid of the 'untouchables', is the main obstacle for holding them accountable. To be continued..." Kholodnytskyi summed up.
Earlier, NABU detectives caught Dniprovskyi district court Judge Chaus accepting $150,000 a bribe Aug. 9.
