Poroshenko expressed gratitude for attention paid by the Mother Church of Constantinople to the issue of a single national Orthodox Church in Ukraine. He praised the fact that the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople had established a special commission to consider a request of the Ukrainian parliament to provide an autocephaly to Ukraine's Orthodox Church. At that, the president is hopeful of commission's prompt decision given the situation in Ukraine.
Poroshenko reiterated the unity of Ukrainian authorities in having a single national Orthodox Church, noting that the issue is becoming increasingly topical against a backdrop of global challenges.
"We should help the faithful realize their aspirations for a single church," he said.
In turn, Archbishop Job of Telmessos informed the Ukrainian president on the progress in the commission's work and offered reassurance that Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew wants to help Ukraine.
The parties discussed the role of state and church in preventing the use of religious factor in destabilizing the situation in Ukraine.
Speaking of the recent religious march dedicated to the anniversary of Christianization of Rus-Ukraine, the president said that the task of the government was to prevent inter-religious and inter-confessional conflicts and expressed satisfaction with the work of law enforcers.
Petro Poroshenko congratulated the Ecumenical Patriarchate on successful holding of the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church.
"I think it strengthened the authority of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in the Orthodox world," the president remarked.
