"The night of Aug. 17 was yet another evidence of the terrorist nature of illegal armed units. From 10:04 to 10:25 p.m. militants fired 152-mm artillery on residential areas of peaceful villages Sartana and Lebedynske in the suburbs of Mariupol. As a result, two Sartana residents were killed, six were wounded. A girl, born 2005, had her foot amputated at a hospital, her mother's condition being critical. At night, six ambulances were involved in a rescue operation. 52 houses were damaged, five of which by direct hit. The gas pipeline was damaged in six areas, as well as water supply and power lines," the message reads.
"At 5 a.m. Aug. 16, in the village of Zaitseve, during a 120-mm mortar strike in the direction of Horlivka, a house burnt down and a civilian woman was killed. Militants deliberately continue to destroy civil infrastructure. At night Aug. 17, Avdiivka was attacked twice. At 9:43 p.m. militants fired 15 MLRS rounds from Yasynuvata, and at 10:44 p.m. five 122-mm mines hit the area from Yakovlivka. The western part of Avdiivka and Avdiivka Coke Plant were also shelled. Some civilian homes on Lenin Street and Ministerstva Putei Soobshcheniia Street are destroyed. The district was blacked out due to power lines disruption," the ATO press center reports.
According to the Ukrainian side leader at the Joint Coordination Center for Ceasefire Monitoring (JCCC) General-Major Borys Kremenetskyi, separatists seek to demoralize and intimidate civilians, as well as discredit local authorities and the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The JCCC photos showcase the facts of barbaric attacks by militants at Sartana and Avdiivka.
"Militants from illegal armed units continue shelling and killing civilians, destroying state institutions, enterprises and social organizations, which provide region's residents with jobs meeting their social and cultural needs. Pro-Russian militants deliberately fire at residential areas with no military units deployed. How much more destruction and deaths are needed for the world community to recognize the terrorist nature of these illegal armed units?" the general said addressing the OSCE representatives.
