Journalist and city council deputy Oleksandr Nikolaichuk, who fought against illegal mining of amber, was severely beaten in the Zhytomyr region on Friday. Criminal investigation under three articles of the Criminal Code is provided.

Journalist Denys Kazanskyi wrote on Facebook, Censor.NET reports.

"City council deputy Oleksandr Nikolaichuk, who helped us with materials about the local 'amber republic', was severely beaten with metal sticks yesterday in the town of Olevsk. He is in the hospital at the moment. His arm is broken, and he has a few stitches on his head. After we published a number of reports, the bandits were ordered to reduce their activities. Mafia representatives found themselves in trouble, so they decided to take revenge on Oleksandr. He received threats before, but it never stopped him. He promises to recover soon and continue the fight against criminality," the journalist wrote.

As Nikolaichuk himself wrote on Facebook, three unknown persons have injured his head and arm.

Criminal proceeding was opened by Zhytomyr police. The attack was qualified as hooliganism, as well as impeding of legitimate activities of journalists and deputies of local councils. If the attackers are caught, they will spend up to 7 years in prison.
