As reported earlier, this division is the one that had seized Crimea under the guise of "polite people."

Ivan Tsetserskiy, the mayor of Pskov, where division is located, also acknowledged that Pskov paratroopers took part in seizing Crimea.

He stated this on July 14 during the Day of Russia celebrations. Tsetserskiy also told that President of Russia Vladimir Putin awarded the rank of major-general to the 76th Guards Air Assault Division commander Alexey Naumets, Russian website Desantura (Russian for "Paratroopers") reports.

"We are proud of our paratroopers. Many of you in these ranks now have one more status - "polite people." We are very pleased, that in the eve of the celebration, our head of garrison, the commander of the 76th division, is awarded a rank of major-general. This is just another high evaluation of our paratroopers and of our glorious city of Pskov," Tsetserskiy said.

As reported, Putin initially denied any involvement of Russian military in the annexation of Crimea. In mid-April Russian president acknowledged that "behind the backs of self-defense forces of Crimea there was Russian military, acting correctly but decisively."

On Aug. 15, having a speech in the annexed Crimea, Putin claimed: "There was no annexation of Crimea. Yes, we used our Armed forces, but only to make referendum happen".
