 Ukraine Recovers Abandoned Military Airfields. PHOTOS

The Ukrainian air force began the restoration of three former airfields: Martynivka (Voznesensk), Buialyk, and Chervonohlinske (Artsyz).

It is not yet clear whether there will be constructed new aviation bases or just aviation commandant's offices.

The runways there are being covered with modern monolithic concrete surface produced by German «Dyckerhoff», informs Ukrainian military portal, Censor.NET reports.

The 642nd Fighter Regiment on MiG -29 had been based In Martynivka (the town of Voznesensk in Mykolaiv region) until 2001. The technical infrastructure of the airfield is in a state of neglect. However, in 2011, an aircraft S-130 was noticed landing the runway while participating in joint exercises which might prove there is a functioning runway at that airfield. Active restoration of the whole infrastructure is being conducted at the moment there.

Buialyk airfield (the Odesa region) was abandoned by Ukrainian armed forces in 2003. Earlier reconnaissance Su - 24MR aircrafts of the 511th Reconnaissance Regiment were based there. The documents necessary for the airfield restoration is in process at the moment.

An airfield Chervonohlinske in the town of Artsiz in the Odesa region had been an aviation commandant's office until 2003., The 206 Air Force Base (the 737 Fighter Regiment) had been based there until 1998. Some of its infrastructure is still functioning being used by a local flying club that consists of light airplanes.

The military commandant's office started functioning at Kanatove airfield in the Kirovohrad region on June 16. It had been disbanded since 2004.

The Defense Ministry also considered the restoration of Bolhrad and Liman airfields in the Odesa region but the idea was soon rejected as the airfields are located too close to the border.
