 Belarus' KGB confirms arrest of Ukrainian businessman Skyba on corruption charges

The State Security Committee (KGB) of Belarus confirmed the detention of Minsk Tractor Plant’s Chief Metallurgist Andrei Karas and Oleksandr Skyba, CEO of Weighing Material Plant PJSC based in government-held Kostiantynivka, the Donetsk region.

Censor.NET reports referring to the statement by the Belarusian KGB press service.

"As part of the campaign against corruption and economic crimes, the KGB of the Republic of Belarus detained Minsk Tractor Plant's Chief Metallurgist Andrei Karas in the act of receiving $2,800 in bribe from Chairman of the Board of the Weighing Material Plant PJSC (Ukraine), citizen of Ukraine, Oleksandr Skyba. The son of detained Karas acted as a middleman in the crime. There is also the evidence of receiving $1,700 in bribe by Minsk Tractor Plant's chief procurement officer Mezga from representatives of private firms. More than 20 instances of corruption committed by executives of the Minsk Tractor Plant OJSC amounting to over $40,000 have been recorded so far," the law enforcement agency said.

The employees of the Minsk Tractor Plant OJSC were charged under article 430 (passive bribery) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus; Skyba was indicted with active bribery under part 2 of article 431 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. All the suspects were placed in the pre-trial custody. The criminal cases were referred to the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus for further investigation.

As reported, Belarus' secret services apprehended CEO of Weighing Material Plant PJSC Skyba while on a business trip to the Minsk Tractor Plant on Nov. 15.

On Nov. 17, Ukraine's National Public Broadcasting Company Chief Zurab Alasania reported Sharoiko's detention in Belarus. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry declined to comment on this issue.

On Nov. 20, the Belarusian KGB made a formal statement on Sharoiko's detention on espionage charges and expulsion of the adviser for the Ukrainian embassy. The KGB claims that Sharoiko has allegedly admitted his membership in Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Agency which Belarus-based undercover agent he allegedly was of.

Earlier, Ukrainian reserve officer Ihor Hryb announced his son Pavlo Hryb was kidnapped by Russian FSB in Belarus: "FSB had lured Pavlo to Gomel under the guise of meeting a girl, and detained him."

On Aug. 24, 2017, Pavlo Hryb, aged 19, left for Belorussian Gomel to see a girl he met through social media, without knowing her personally, the father wrote. The girl was supposed to come from the Russian Federation. Pavlo was to return home on the same day, but he didn't. His father went to search for his son in Gomel the next day, and found that Pavlo was wanted by Russian FSB for a terrorist attack.

On Sept. 8, Hryb's attorneys said they were not allowed to see their client in Krasnodar prison.

On Sept. 13, a court in Krasnodar, Russia, arrested Hryb until Oct. 17.
