Hroisman travelled to Poltava region where he visited several gas reservoirs developed by Ukrhazvydobuvannia State Holding.
"This year's domestic gas production will reach 15.2 billion cubic meters while our next objective is to achieve annual gas extraction of 20 billion cubic meters by 2020," the PM said.
He stressed that energy independence would allow not only to cease fuel imports often used as a leverage against Ukraine, but also contribute to the domestic price cutting.
"Ukraine will become energy independent while Ukrainians will have cheap gas," Hroisman said.
At a meeting on Nov. 22, the Ukrainian government considered and approved the concept of development of the Ukrainian gas industry, which provides for an increase in domestic gas production and a medium-term export prospect. The scientists have found that Ukraine's proven gas reserves amount to 276 billion cubic meters (140 deposits). The total potential of the fields is three times as much - 923 billion cubic meters. Ukraine was reducing domestic gas production over the past decades including due to several political decisions. A positive trend in gas production was recorded in 2016. The total volume of gas extracted last year was 14.6 billion cubic meters.
