Rada gives Ukrainians day off on Dec. 25, May 2 becomes work day

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a bill amending the Labor Code in terms of holidays.

As reported by a parliamentary correspondent for Censor.NET, 238 lawmakers voted for the corresponding bill.

The bill establishes Christmas (Dec. 25 on the Gregorian calendar) the national holiday and a day off.

The Act takes into account amendment made by Speaker Parubii that cancels a day off on May 2. Labor Day will be celebrated only on May 1.

Commenting on the adoption of legislation introducing a day off on Christmas, National Security and Defense Council Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov said: "From now on, Ukraine will celebrate Christmas on the same day with the entire civilized world in accordance with the calendar all of us use."

"This is a landmark decision that will strengthen Ukraine's European aspirations and allow us to leave Moscow-drafted calendars and Russian imperial standards behind," the NSDC secretary said.

Two years ago, Turchynov proposed to codify celebration of Christmas on Dec. 25. This initiative was supported by the community and leaders of many Christian denominations.
