 Oleksandr Avakov released on personal recognizance

Solomianskyi district court of Kyiv imposed no pre-trial detention on Interior Minister Arsen Avakov’s son Oleksandr after hearing of the case initiated into alleged embezzlement of public funds while procuring backpacks for the Interior Ministry. The suspect was released on his own recognizance.

As reported by a correspondent for Censor.NET from the courtroom, the decision was made by Judge of Solomianskyi district court of Kyiv Vitalii Ukrainets on Wednesday night.

Oct. 31, the NABU carried out searches at the premises owned by Interior Minister Arsen Avakov's son Oleksandr.

The hidden camera footage published last February showed a person looking like Interior Minister Arsen Avakov's son Oleksandr and a person who looked like former Deputy Interior Minister Serhii Chebotar discussing supply of a batch of backpacks for the law enforcement agency detachments at an inflated price.

The footage of conversation was dated December 2014 while the Ministry of Internal Affairs actually purchased backpacks for 16.5 million hryvnia as early as in February 2015.

Interior Minister Avakov refuted all allegations of his family members' involvement in the procurement of backpacks.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine brought indictments against two persons of interest in the so-called 'backpacks case'.
