 Fire in Kalynivka depot localized, towns to be cleared of mines in upcoming days, - Head of State Emergency Service Chechotkin

Head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine Mykola Chechotkin said that the fire at the ammunition depot in Kalynivka, the Vinnytsia region, has been completely localized.

Chechotkin said in a report to the president, Censor.NET reports citing the press service of the Presidential Administration.

"The fire has been localized. We do not expect its further spread and are liquidating the last smoke pockets," the head of the State Emergency Service said after returning from Kalynivka.

Rescuers continue working on the fire site round the clock, and air rescuers are ready to get back to work if needed.

The head of the State Emergency Service said that the rescue efforts were focused on evacuation of civilians from Kalynivka vicinity, UNIAN reported.

He said more than 30,000 people have been evacuated.

"I think we will clear the towns of mines in upcoming days, and the people will be able to return to regular lives," he said.

Chechotkin added that his agency will help local authorities in restoration works.

As reported, on Sept. 26 at around 10 p.m., State Emergency Service was reported of ammunition explosions in the military depot of the Defense Ministry in Kalynivka village. A Censor.NET source said that the explosions were heard in the village, and ammo was seen flying over the depot. The Kalynivka depot is more than 1,000 ha and packed with ammunition of various types.

As of 10 a.m. Sept. 27, more than 30,000 people have been evacuated. For that purpose, 50 buses, 10 ambulances, and Emergency Service psychologists were involved. Two people were traumatized and taken to hospitals.
