This was announced by Russian MoD, Censor.NET reports citing RIA Novosti.
"Senior member of the group of Russian military advisers Lieutenant General Asapov was at a command outpost of the Syrian troops, assisting Syrian commanders in the liberation of the city of Deir ez-Zor," the ministry said.
The general was fatally wounded by a mine explosion.
Govorit Moskva Radio reported the connection with Asapov was lost on Saturday at 4 p.m. A source in Syria told the station that the general and two colonels were killed in well-aimed mortar attack. The missile hit the command outpost.
In March 2016, Ukraine's Main Intelligence Department of the Defense Ministry said that Asapov was a commander of the "1st army corps of the "DPR"."
The intelligence data said Asapov was sent on a "business trip" to Rostov-on-Don in July 2015. He commanded the "1st army corps" since August 2015 under cover last name of Primakov. Asapov was promoted to lieutenant general for his service in the Donbas in June 2016.
