8.5 million retired Ukrainians receive pension payments at living wage, - Social Policy Minister Reva

Out of 12 million Ukrainian retirees, 8.5 million receive pension payments in the amount of living wage.

This was announced by Social Policy Minister Andrii Reva on air of ICTV Monday evening, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"Out of 12 million retirees, 8.5 million receive pension payments in the amount of living wage not because they have not earned it, but because their pension payments haven't been recalculated since 2008," Reva said.

The pension system and its parameters, the minister said, have been mostly targeted at people who have just retired, while the rest of pensioners have been left behind.

"We have this situation when a person who just retired was receiving maximum payments, but in two or five years they would return to poverty. And the longer they live, the poorer they become. This system is based on a scary and cynical principle - if you live a long life, that's your problem," the minister said.

He explained that the pension reform provides for increase in payments, but the bigger increase will be allocated for those people who retired long time ago, not recently.

The Cabinet of Ministers supported the draft pension reform bill back in May. The document was subsequently sent to the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada.
