The parties discussed the current security situation in Ukraine and the world, the development of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the prospects for bilateral cooperation, and the expansion of material and technical support from the U.S. to repel the ongoing aggression against Ukraine and conduct the military reform.
Mattis said he understands how extremely difficult it is to carry out reforms in a time of war, but stressed that the reform can be utterly effective, because all the decisions are tested under real war conditions.
Stepan Poltorak said he was satisfied with the results of the exercises conducted by the U.S. military in Ukraine.
"The training brings positive results. The capabilities of our soldiers have improved significantly during the fighting. We would like to expand the geography of such exercises and to this end, we are creating an appropriate infrastructure," said the minister.
Overall, the parties held a good and friendly discussion, expressed their vision of the development of the situation and the common desire to achieve success in bilateral relations.
The development of a strong Ukraine is a noble cause and the U.S. will contribute to it, said U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis.
