 Russian mercenary Kusakin sentenced to eight years in prison in Ukraine

Novomoskovskyi district court of the Dnipropetrovsk region has sentenced Russian citizen, "Donetsk people's republic" terrorist Vasily Kusakin to eight years in prison.

Censor.NET reports citing the court sentence of Aug. 11.

According to the case file, in June 2015 a resident of Yakutia told a terrorist of the "DPR," whose identity is not established, in Odnoklassniki social network that he wants to serve as a mercenary. The terms of joining the "DPR" terrorist organization were voiced to him during subsequent personal meeting in Rostov-on-Don.

The unidentified "DPR" terrorist helped the Russian mercenary with the transfer to the occupied territory of the Donetsk region to Sonechko boarding house in the occupied village of Bezimenne, where the "9th motorized rifle regiment of the 1st Army Corps of the 'DPR'" was based. The man started serving as a mercenary and was trained by "DPR" terrorists.

Later he was transferred to Typhoon "military intelligence unit," where he captured Ukrainian officers in the village of Kominternove. Later he was enlisted as a "field engineer."

In November 2015, he was transferred to the sabotage and reconnaissance group "White Swans." In December 2015, he received a "DPR" military ticket, where he was titled a "machine gunner." From Jan. 16, 2016 to Feb. 27, 2016 he took part in fighting at Tunel position in the town of Shyrokyne, conducting armed resistance to Ukrainian military units.

According to a witness who communicated with the suspect in Odnoklassniki, the defendant received a monthly salary of 20,000 rubles ($336) for participation in the war.

The suspect pleaded guilty in the court. He said he realized they were waging a war against the army of Ukraine. He said they were assigned combat missions to take weapons and capture Ukrainian officers.

The court sentenced him to eight years in prison without confiscation of property. His pretrial detention since Jan. 17, 2017 will be also included as a prison term.
