Ukraine hasn't bought single cubic meter of gas from Russia in 500 days, - Poroshenko

The reform of the energy sector is one of the most important reforms of all implemented in Ukraine since the Revolution of Dignity.

As reported by Censor.NET, President Petro Poroshenko said in his address to students and faculty of Ihor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

"To understand that, we need to analyze the condition of our energy sector in 2014. We were among the sad top 10 countries with the lowest [energy] efficiency. This is calculated by the amount of energy spent on producing one unit of GDP," the head of state said.

Poroshenko also mentioned the importance of decreasing dependence on Russian gas and overcoming of energy blockade as an element of hybrid war.

"Think of it: in October 2015, the head of Naftohaz approached me and said that in two days Russia would completely stop its gas supplies to Ukraine. This was made in October on purpose, so that Ukraine entered winter with zero balance of gas. They tried to put us on our knees, to make the situation in the country even worse. But our decisive actions, including securing the reverse of gas and buying gas from the EU, and harsh steps to restore order in the energy sector resulted in us having not bought a single cubic meter of gas in more than 500 days... Moreover, when in April the Russians called us and asked: "Could you buy our gas?", we said: no, we are fine," he added.

The litigation against Gazprom over "absolutely oppressive contract that was signed by the Ukrainian government in 2009" is another important step, the president said.
