The Russian Defense Ministry says Viktor Ageev, who was captured by Ukrainian army on June 24 in the Luhansk region, retired from the Russian army last year.

As reported by Censor.NET, this was announced by Interfax-Russia citing the MoD statement.

"Viktor Ageev never served in the Russian army as a contract soldier. He was a drafted serviceman until 2016, when he left military service. Information of his subsequent signing of a contract is fake," the MoD stated.

They say Ageev's retirement is confirmed by his military ID, which has information of his resignation from the army in May 2016.

As reported, Russian scout Ageev, born in 1995, was captured by fighters of the Ukrainian Army in a skirmish between the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade and a scout group of the 4th mechanized brigade of the 2nd army corps of the so-called "Luhansk People's Republic" at Zholobok, the Luhansk region, on June 24.

Ageev's mother, his friends and former comrades confirmed to reporters that after his draft military service term ended, he signed a contract with the Russian army in March 2017.
