"Look at the powerful and fantastic support we have today in the United States. I came today with the first visit after the presidential elections (in the U.S. - ed.). And we have a fantastic program," the head of state said during the meeting with the Ukrainian community.
"It is very important that my meeting, as [of] Ukrainian President, in the White House will take place earlier than the meeting of Putin," Petro Poroshenko said adding that it is necessary to "provide information and leave no chance for injustice."
The president emphasized that Ukraine has a very powerful bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress.
Poroshenko said the decision of the U.S. Senate to impose new sanctions against Russia became "a wonderful gift." He stressed that sanctions are a civilized mechanism to force the aggressor to get away from Ukraine, withdraw troops and weaponry.
The head of state emphasized that a lot of meetings are planned during the working visit.
"There will be meetings in the White House, there will be meetings in the Department of State. There will be meetings in the Department of Defense, Department of Commerce and Department of Energy," he said.
"There has never been such a substantial visit. We will have an opportunity to discuss our cooperation in security, political and economic spheres," the president said.
Petro Poroshenko is on official visit to the U.S. on June 19-20.
