President Petro Poroshenko has signed the Law of Ukraine that bans production and propaganda of the so-called St.George ribbon, which has been extensively used by Russian separatists in the east of Ukraine as a symbol of their "independence" movement. The law was passed by the Verkhovna Rada on May 16, 2017.

Censor.NET reports citing presidential website.

Earlier, Poroshenko said that St.George ribbon, which used to be a symbol of Soviet victory in WWII, is now a symbol of the aggression against Ukraine of 2014-2017.

"Russia itself has made this ribbon illegal through its policy in Ukraine," Poroshenko said on May 21.

The law amends Ukraine's Administrative Offense Code with a new article stipulating for liability for production and propaganda of St.George ribbon. Public use of the decoration will lead to a fine.

The law will come into effect the next day after its publication.
