As reported by Censor.NET citing Ukrinform, this was said by first deputy military prosecutor of the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) forces Vitalii Panchenko.
"Two contract soldiers died during the exercise involving BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles. Shrapnel wounds were found on both of them," he said.
According to him, it is still not clear what caused their death.
"Interim findings show that a shell exploded next to the servicemen," the law enforcer added.
He said that the criminal proceedings were initiated under part 3 of article 414 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (breaching weapons handling regulations). Investigators consider two versions of the incident: breaching rules for handling weapons which entailed grave consequences and negligence of commanders during the exercise.
As reported, two servicemen of the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade were killed during drills at the Chuhuivskyi combined-arms training ground in the Kharkiv region on April 26.
