 Turchynov says US military strike on Syria airbase adequate and timely response

NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov believes that the U.S. missile strike on a military facility in Syria is an appropriate and timely response to the recent deadly chemical attack on civilians committed by Russia's ally Bashar al-Assad.

Turchynov said at a meeting with NATO Deputy Secretary-General Rose Gottemoeller, Censor.NET reports citing the press service of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the situation that developed as a result of Russia's military aggression against Ukraine. The interlocutors paid special attention to the issue of Ukraine-NATO cooperation, reforming Ukraine's security and defense sector and its transition to the NATO standards.

The officials determined a number of strategic directions for cooperation, including the efforts to counter modern hybrid threats.

As reported, U.S. warships launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian government airbase on President Donald Trump's orders on April 7. U.S. officials said the warplanes that carried out the chemical attacks were based there. The missiles were launched from warships in the Eastern Mediterranean.

According to recent data, 100 people died and 300 were injured in a chemical attack in the Syrian northwestern province of Idlib. UNICEF confirmed a t least 27 children were killed in the attack in Idlib, northwest of Syria.
