President Petro Poroshenko is confident the decision of the European Parliament to grant visa-free travel for Ukrainians is a signal of Ukraine belonging to common European civilization and evidence of success and irreversible moving toward the integration into Europe.
The president congratulated everyone on the successful vote in the European Parliament.
"The vast majority of political forces, except for marginal pro-Russian, pro-Putin parties, provided strong support for us in this issue. 521 MEPs expressed firm and full support for Ukraine," he said.
Poroshenko noted that visa-free travel will have a significant practical importance for many citizens. According to him, almost three million Ukrainians have already received or are now receiving biometric passports required for going to the EU without visas. Only in 2016, Ukrainians crossed the state border with the EU countries more than 15 million times.
He emphasized the decision of the European Parliament is much broader than visa-free travel or freedom of movement.
"It means greater pride for Ukrainian citizenship and attractiveness of Ukrainian passport. It is a symbol of Ukraine belonging to common European civilization. It is a clear signal of Ukraine being part of united Europe, from Lisbon to Kharkiv, and sharing common values. It is evidence of strategic rightness of our European choice, success and irreversibly of our course toward the integration into Europe," Petro Poroshenko said.
"And finally, today's voting means the European Parliament's recognition of the depth of our reforms," the president said reminding that the visa liberalization action plan contained almost 150 requirements, and all of them had been fulfilled.
He added that now the ball is in the court of the EU Council.
"We await its positive decision in the coming weeks. I am in regular contact with the leaders of European countries to make it happen as soon as possible," Poroshenko said.
He added that the government and all authorities must persistently work so that the number of Ukrainians financially capable of travelling to Europe grows each year.
"I am sincerely grateful to the president of the European Parliament, rapporteurs of the European Parliament on the Ukrainian issue, delegation for relations with Ukraine, Friends of European Ukraine group and all European lawmakers for their personal efforts aimed at reaching this goal, so important for every Ukrainian," the head of state said.
"I bow down to glorious Ukrainian warriors who defend not only Ukraine's territorial integrity and European choice but also the entire system of values of the Old World in the struggle against the Russian aggressor," Poroshenko concluded.
