Crimean Tatars face repression for saying "no" to Russia occupation, - Canadian lawmaker

Russia unleashed massive reprisals against the indigenous Crimea's population after invading the peninsula.

Canadian MP and shadow defense minister James Besan said in the federal parliament, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

According to the politician, the indigenous people of Crimea - the Crimean Tatars - said "no" to the Russian invasion and illegal occupation, and now their human rights are being violated.

He underscored the Crimean Tatars are no longer allowed to pray in their mosques, gather in the Mejlis, maintain their own newspapers or radio and television channels.

Russian occupiers have completely destroyed the freedom of speech in Crimea, Besan said.

He also resented the failure on the Budapest Memorandum by its signatories.

The Kremlin illegally annexed Crimea, held a referendum, and the world did not comply with the Budapest Memorandum, the MP recalled.
