Chernihiv region police Chief Colonel Eduard Aliokhin told a briefing, Censor.NET reports citing the press service of the National Police of Ukraine.
He also disclosed the operation details.
According to Aliokhin, at about 1 p.m. Feb. 27, the special forces unit conducted an operation to apprehend ex-convict drug addict suspected of involvement in a number of grave crimes. Among other offenses, he was suspected of committing a armed attack on a pawnshop in Chernihiv which employee received serious gunshot wound to the head after the attacker fired more than two dozen shots at him using automatic firearm.
The perpetrator, who turned out to be heavy drug user, was living in his former fellow inmate's apartment. Being under influence, he fastened a hand grenade to his trousers.
When Spetsnaz entered the apartment, the suspect threw grenade at them. Two policemen were injured by shrapnel as a result of the explosion. One of them is in critical but stable condition. The offender was wounded as well.
The suspect was apprehended by the police. The law enforcers found and seized a 5.45 Kalashnikov rifle equipped with a silencer and three loaded magazines.
The information on the offense was included in the Unified Register of pre-trial investigations and criminal proceedings were initiated under article 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer) punishable by 9-15 years in prison or life imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation is underway.
Earlier on Monday, Feb. 27, the police caught the criminal who had committed an armed attack on a pawnshop in Chernihiv several days before. During the operation, two police officers were wounded.
