 Puhachov, charged with Dnipro police officers’ murder, refused to testify in court

Oleksandr Puhachev claimed his right to refuse to testify in court according to the Article 63 of the Constitution of Ukraine.

Puhachov refused to testify at the hearing in the Central district court of Dnipro on Feb. 17, Censor.NET reports citing UNIAN.

He also filed a petition on the conditions of his stay in the courtroom. He is being kept in a special metal and glass cage. His lawyer Artem Khodiush claims it "degrades the honor and dignity" of his client. The judges rejected the petition.

Nadia Makarenko, the mother of the deceased police patrol officer, said she filed a lawsuit against the Puhachov for compensation for moral damages for the death of her daughter. She also confirmed she would seek a life sentence for the defendant.

The accused pleaded not guilty. The next hearing is scheduled for March 3.

A traffic law violator shot a patrol officer dead and wounded his female partner in Dnipro City on Sept. 25, 2016.

The patrol crew stopped a Citroen car for violation of traffic rules. The driver began to resist the police officers, made a few shots, and fled the scene. Patrol officer Artem Kutushev died on spot, while his female partner officer Olha Makarenko did not survive a surgery.

Later, the interior minister confirmed the detention of a suspect in the murder in a hospital where he addressed for treatment of a gunshot wound caused by Kutushev. It turned out that a suspect was a former Tornado fighter, previously convicted Oleksandr Puhachov.

Tragic footage from the chest camera of murdered police officer Artem Kutushev was uploaded online later. The Interior Ministry says they will not publish the entire camera record for ethical reasons.
