This was announced by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov in a commentary, Censor.NET reports citing the NSDC press service.
Turchynov said the situation deteriorated right after "the inspection mission of the OSCE in the east of Ukraine ended."
"After their departure, the intensity of shelling by Russian hybrid troops of our positions with Minsk-banned weapons has significantly increased," Turchynov said.
He added that Ukrainian positions are shelled with large-caliber artillery, mortars, and multiple launch rocket systems, all of which are banned by Minsk agreements. Over the past 24-hour period, Turchynov said, about 1,500 shells were fired upon Ukrainian positions.
"All assaults by the Russian terrorist groups have been repulsed by our troops. In addition, Ukrainian military were forced to counterattack in order to improve their positions," NSDC secretary said.
He said the situation is a threat to civilians, as several people have been wounded in the shelling.
If the Avdiivka shelling continues, Turchynov said, the State Emergency Service is ready to evacuate its residents to the nearest villages and towns.
"The Ukrainian army is holding its positions, so all attempts by militant to break through our defenses are doomed," the NDSC secretary said.
