 Hollande, Merkel, Putin discuss Donbas conflict settlement

French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a telephone conversation with President Vladimir Putin of Russia.

"The French president stressed that the cease-fire that officially came into force on Dec. 24, 2016 should be sustainable along the entire front line. He also recalled the need for urgent progress on humanitarian issues: the release of prisoners under 'all for all' principle and restoration of sustainable water supply," the statement by the press office of the French president reads.

The heads of state also concluded that the provisions of the Minsk deal were the only way to resolve the crisis in eastern Ukraine.

"From this point of view, the Normandy format is the most convenient for the implementation of all issues, including security and political," the statement reads.

As reported, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko discussed settlement of the conflict in eastern Ukraine with the leaders of France and Germany in a telephone conversation on Jan. 16.
