Censor.NET chief editor Yurii Butusov describes the events referring to a source in the staff of a battalion engaged in the fighting.
"The escalation was provoked by an attempt of an enemy's recon group to outflank a frontline position of the 1st battalion of the 54th motorized infantry brigade. The battle started at around 6 a.m. Dec. 18. In its turn, a 20 men strong attack group of the 1st battalion commanded by company commander, Lieutenant Mykola Yarovyi advanced to cut off the line of retreat for the Russian mercenaries. The enemy lost in this skirmish and ran away. The threat to the battalion's flank was eliminated. Persecuting the enemy, our fighters took frontline positions of the Russian unit that had been seized in the 'grey area' in violation of the Minsk deal. The Russian heavy artillery launched massive shelling of Ukrainian troops in the area as well as villages in the near rear. Luhanske and Myronivske came under burst of missiles," Butusov says.
The Ukrainian artillery was also put forward to cover Ukrainian troops. However, it could not suppress the Russian artillery.
"The enemy continued intensive shelling for almost two days. It acted in an organized manner with significant troops. Despite having hit numerous fire positions of the Russian troops, Ukrainian military was not able to completely silence the enemy artillery.
All attempts of infantry units and armored vehicles of the 7th brigade of the Russian occupation forces to re-seize the abandoned positions in the 'grey area' were repulsed," the journalist wrote.
Seven Ukrainian soldiers are reported dead and one missing in action after the battles of the Svitlodarsk salient on Dec. 18-19.
