Soldier Popov deserts with personal weapon after killing comrade

The 93rd Mechanized Brigade has given details of the incident with a Ukrainian serviceman who killed his commander and defected to the enemy.

Censor.NET reports referring to the 93rd Brigade Facebook page.

As noted, on Dec. 1, 2016, Sergeant Oleh Popov was on duty at a platoon strong point. At around 2:30 p.m., being influenced by anti-Ukrainian propaganda or some other circumstances that the investigation will establish, he left the post with his weapon.

In order to get rid of the witness and avoid possible obstacles to his pre-planned escape, Popov brutally killed his commander and comrade Sergeant Oleh Lysenko, with whom he had long shared the dugout, trench, ration and hardships of military service.

All unit's equipment and weapons except for Popov's machine gun, which he took along with him, are at the strong point.

"Probe is underway, criminal proceedings have been instituted, and a number of measures to prevent similar tragic incidents in future have been taken," the message reads.
