 Parliament fails to amend "Savchenko law"

Ukrainian lawmakers have refused to amend the law counting one day of pre-trial detention as two days of imprisonment so as it does not apply to those convicted for grave and especially grave crimes.

As reported by Censor.NET citing Ukrainski Novyny, two similar bills No. 4032 and No. 4548 were voted by 155 and 143 MPs respectively at the required minimum of 226.

At present, 8,500 prisoners have been released, and 35,000 more are about to be released under the "Savchenko law."

Of those released, 906 persons have already repeated crimes, including 27 murders, 21 cases of inflicting grave injuries, 12 rapes, 670 thefts, 172 robberies, 68 robberies with beating, 43 frauds and 23 cases of hooliganism.
