Ukraine’s Police Chief Dekanoidze vacates seat: "My mission accomplished"

Chief of the National Police of Ukraine Khatia Dekanoidze tendered her resignation.

As reported by Censor.NET, Khatia Dekanoidze said at a briefing in Kyiv.

"I did everything possible within my competence to make all of these principles (transparency and independence of the police - Ed.) observed. As I promised, I have laid the foundation to the development of the new National Police during the year, remained faithful to you and your interests until the last minute at the post. But, unfortunately, my competence and will were insufficient for drastic changes. My mission has been accomplished, and therefore, I tender my resignation," Dekanoidze said.

She also thanked her team, police officers, journalists, and Ukrainian citizens for the support.

Dekanoidze called on the politicians and officials not to interfere in the police activities.

"The candidates to the posts in the law enforcement agencies must not be agreed with the politicians. The politicians should not use the law enforcement agencies to their advantage. Without understanding of this, the country will again be doomed to confrontation between the society and the authorities sooner or later," Dekanoidze said.

According to her, she would not appoint Troian the new police chief.

"I cannot say that Vadym Troian is a politically independent person. So I personally, as Khatia Dekanoidze, a citizen of Ukraine, do not see him the new chief. This is my point of view," she said.

Asked whether she planned to join the team of Saakashvili, who announced creation of a new political party and called for early parliamentary elections, she said: "I am not a politician. The law forbids me to be a politician... I was an executive doing my job. I'm going to focus on raising my son, take care of my health right now, and then we will meet again."
