This was said by Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Hroisman at a meeting with students and teaching team of the Kherson State Maritime Academy, Censor.NET reports citing the press service of the Cabinet.
"We have additionally extracted 50 million [cubic meters of gas] over six months. We will be additionally producing 500 million cubic meters of our own Ukrainian gas next year. We will be able to increase gas production up to 7 billion cubic meters in 5 years, by 2020. This means that we will be actually consuming domestically-produced gas alone," Hroisman said.
The prime minister said the increase in the Ukrainian gas production was preceded by the continuous decline period.
The head of Ukrainian government stressed that it was critical for the country to produce its own gas and emphasized the need to invest in this sector. "PJSC Ukrhazvydobuvannia is working in this direction," the official said.
According to Volodymyr Hroisman, the domestic gas production development is absolutely consistent with the government's priorities to make the country achieve energy independence.
"Ukraine should become energy independent. Gas production is one of the priorities. We are able to increase gas production and reduce its consumption in 3-5 years. This will make us completely independent of imported gas," the prime minister said.
