"I declared 1 trillion to draw attention; I had 10 million in cash early this year," - former Aidar Battalion commander, MP Melnychuk comments on his 'fake' income statement

Volia Narodu Group MP Serhii Melnychuk said he declared 1 trillion hryvnia ($38.6 billion) in cash in order to draw attention to the ill-conceived procedure of electronic declarations, which should not only reveal wealth of state officials but also punish for corruption.

He told journalists on the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada, Censor.NET's correspondent reports.

Melnychuk said that the declaration system should not be limited to revealing wealth of Ukrainian state officials, but also demand declarations of taxes paid to the state budget on the amounts earned and declared.

"I declared one trillion in advance to draw attention, and wanted to amend it several hours before the deadline, but the system did not allow me. It even showed I had an apartment in Vinnytsia, which I do not," Melnychuk said.

Reacting to the journalists' comments that he must be held accountable for this 'joke,' the MP said he would.

Melnychuk said that as of Jan. 1, 2016, he in fact had 10 million hryvnia in cash earned from his business prior to being elected to the parliament.
