Poroshenko on Donbas special status: prerequisite is very simple - free and fair local elections

The law on special procedure of local self-government in separate districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions will come into force immediately after free and fair OSCE-recognized elections are held in the terrorist-held areas.

As reported by Censor.NET referring to Ukrinform, President Poroshenko said when speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg in Olso on Tuesday.

"This law has been voted in the parliament and signed by me. The only prerequisite for the implementation of this law is very simple - free and fair local elections in the Donbas that will meet the OSCE criteria and democratic standards," the president remarked commenting on the situation around the law on special procedure of local self-government in separate districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and the implementation of Ukraine's commitments under the Minsk agreements.

As Poroshenko noted, sometimes the Russian "partners" have difficulty understanding it.

"They do not need any additional steps either by the Ukrainian parliament or by the Ukrainian president. Since immediately after local elections take place, and their results are recognized by an independent OSCE mission, the law will take effect," he stressed.
