Moreover, Tokyo insists that the Kuril Islands chain do not include the islands of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai in the south of the archipelago. Japan believes that they are parts of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. On this basis, Tokyo insists on the return of these territories.
Earlier, President Vladimir Putin of Russia disproved the Kuril Islands' sale to Japan.
