 Russia still prevents Ukrainian consul from visiting journalist Sushchenko, - Foreign Ministry

Ukrainian Consulate in Russia has not yet received permission to visit unlawfully detained Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mariana Betsa said, Censor.NET reports citing UNIAN.

"As of right now, there is no information on the permission for our consul to meet with journalist Roman Sushchenko. We already reported that the Ukrainian Embassy in Russia filed a request for visit permit once we found about it on Oct. 2. Our consul personally handed the petition to the Investigation Directorate of the Russian Federal Security Service yesterday, Oct. 3, in the morning. The corresponding note was also filed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia," she said.

Betsa recalled that Russia was obliged to immediately grant such access in accordance with the international law and bilateral convention on consular relations.

"We still have obtained no information from the Russian side as of right now," Betsa said.

The spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry stressed that the Ukrainian side would continue taking measures and exerting pressure on the Russian Federation to gain access and ascertain all the circumstances of the case.

Earlier, members of Moscow's Public Monitoring Commission found Ukrinform news agency correspondent Roman Sushchenko in Lefortovo prison. The Lefortovo court of Moscow arrested the journalist on charges of espionage (article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) for two months.

Later, Ukraine's Information Policy Ministry confirmed the detention of Sushchenko. The ministry said its legal department was collecting necessary information on the circumstances and reasons for the detention.

In turn, the FSB claims Ukrainian journalist Sushchenko is an agent of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine's MoD.
